Cody and Boe

Though her career began in the show and obedience rings, Cody, a Belgian Malinois owned by Kathy Newman, became known nationally as a superb search dog. Back in the days when search and rescue was still a fledgling pursuit, Cody began her formal training by attending Avalanche Rescue Dog Training in Nevada. Since then the team of Kathy and Cody have attended no fewer than 18 national training seminars, ranging from Urban Disaster Rescue to Basic Search Dog Rapelling to their specialty, Cadaver Search. These seminars were taught by the best in the business and at many of these Kathy had Cody evaluated objectively by the instructors. Upon becoming certified with MinnSARDA in 1989, as one of the few search dogs in Minnesota, Cody was called out to participate in such well known and tragic missions as the searches for Jacob Wetterling, Corrine Erstad, Holly Spangler and more recently, Julie Holmquist. Cody has had several "live finds" in her career, including following a 20+ hour old trail to locate a missing fisherman, and locating two missing children huddled together in a corn field. With her help several other searches have been resolved by body recovery, including her first cadaver find while she was still in "cadaver school"! In all, Cody has assisted in over 150 searches including water recoveries, speculative homicide searches, lost persons and evidence finds. And to further demonstrate Cody's versatility, she also starred in a children's full-length movie, "K-9 Capers". Sadly we lost Cody in February of '04.

Boe was certified in 1997 and served Minnsarda until 08/03 when sadly he was taken by cancer. He worked over 100 searches and was certified in Trailing, Air-scent area search, Land and Water Cadaver and Basic Diaster. He attended many seminars and had several finds in his search career. He also had his AKC CGC and C.D. degree.
